Navigating The Divide: Future Me Vs Current Me Journal Prompt

Are you feeling stagnant? Are you wanting to clarify your goals and direction? I have the perfect exercise and journal prompt for you!

This is the current me vs future me exercise. Sometimes there is a divide between who we are and who we want to be. The best thing that we can do is visualize where and who we want to be. And that will help us take the steps we need in order to get there. This exercise will help you see that reaching your future is attainable, and you can take the steps towards becoming that person.

In 2017 I completed this journal prompt,  and in 2021 I became the person I had envisioned myself to be. What is so important is to remember that you have potential! But to cultivate that potential you will need to take steps to become that person and reach your goals.

Let’s talk about “Current Me”, this is the version of you as you are at this moment. Maybe you struggle with self discipline, and are feeling stagnant because you crave comfort and familiarity. Which can mean at times, that your habits have become your comfort. You are only familiar with this version of yourself so sometimes change can feel out of reach.

“Future Me” is the version of you that has reached the goals, made the changes and put in the effort. This is who you could be if you actively do internal work to become that person. This is the version of you who steps out of comfort and is actively self reflective.

How does this exercise work?

It’s very easy! All you do is draw a figure of yourself and caption it “Current Me”. You then want to write things about yourself right now that you would like to work on. Some examples could be: not being motivated, wanting to wear hijab, wanting to become more present, not enjoying your work, struggling with personal relationships. You also want to include good qualities about yourself that can take you even further in the future some examples could be: being personable, seeing good in others, having a positive outlook, taking risks. I recommend visualizing your future self in a minimum one year interval. Giving yourself one, two or three years to get somewhere allows you the time to not feel overwhelmed by the changes you want to make. And some things can happen sooner than others, so giving yourself the time and space is important. The example below shows how you can outline this!

The interplay between our "current me" and "future me" is a complex journey. While the current self may resist change and prioritize immediate gratification, it's essential to remember that growth and personal development are achieved by balancing short-term comfort with long-term aspirations. By setting clear goals, practicing delayed gratification, and maintaining accountability, we can navigate this divide and evolve into the best versions of ourselves. In doing so, we bridge the gap between our current and future selves, ultimately creating a more fulfilling and purposeful life journey.
